Гипотеза о том, что риск стохастических эффектов прямо пропорционален дозе для всех уровней дозы и мощности дозы (ниже уровней, при которых появляются детерминированные эффекты). Т.е. любая ненулевая доза подразумевает ненулевой риск стохастических эффектов. Это – рабочая гипотеза, на которой основаны нормы безопасности МАГАТЭ (и рекомендации Международной комиссии по радиологической защите). Она не доказана – и в действительности, вероятно, не доказуема – в отношении низких доз и мощностей дозы, однако считается радиобиологически наиболее оправданным предположением, на котором базируются нормы безопасности. В других гипотезах строится предположение, что риск стохастических эффектов при низких дозах и/или мощностях дозы: a) выше, чем подразумевается в линейной беспороговой гипотезе (сверхлинейные гипотезы); b) ниже, чем подразумевается в линейной беспороговой гипотезе (подлинейные гипотезы); c) равен нулю в случае, когда доза или мощность дозы ниже некоторого порогового значения (пороговые гипотезы); или d) является отрицательным в случае, когда доза или мощность дозы ниже некоторого порогового значения, т.е. что низкие дозы и мощности дозы защищают людей от стохастических эффектов и/или других видов вреда (гипотезы гормезиса).
